3D printed interface for Astronomy laser pointer

/

19 October 2026: A section of the base (printed in resin) split. Redesigned and printed in PETG on the X2D. Waiting for clear skies to test how well the final interface/laser pointer work.

The aim was to mount to laser pointer to a Sky Watcher Star Adventurer mount to help locate objects in the night sky as the Star Adventurer has no goto capabilities. The laser pointer was first scanned using a SLS (structured light scanner) and FlexScan3D to get an accurate 3D model of the physical shape. Although cylindrical in shape, the laser pointer has a number of flat surfaces when seen in cross section. The interface/adapter was designed in two parts with a hinge mechanism. Version 1 was 3D printed on the X-Plus in PETG and had an internal hinge structure. In version 2, the hinge was replaced by a metal nut-bolt combination and was 3D printed in resin on the Saturn 3U. The resin printed base part had an issue with layers splitting. The base part was redesigned and printed in PETG on the X2D.
